5-6 Day Marangu Route

The 5-6 Day Marangu Route is one of the most established routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and is often called the “Coca-Cola Route.” It approaches the summit from the southeastern side of the mountain and is the only Kilimanjaro route that uses permanent mountain huts for overnight accommodation. The 5-day itinerary is more direct, while the 6-day option adds an acclimatization day and allows a more gradual ascent.

Key Highlights:

  • Marangu Route: A well-established Kilimanjaro route with a straightforward trail and permanent mountain huts.
  • Hut Accommodation: Trekkers sleep in shared mountain huts at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo camps rather than tents.
  • Gradual Trail: The route follows a relatively direct path through Kilimanjaro’s major vegetation zones.
  • Maundi Crater: The additional acclimatization day can provide an opportunity to explore the Maundi Crater area around Mandara.
  • Kibo Summit: The final ascent begins from Kibo Hut and continues toward Gilman’s Point before reaching Uhuru Peak.

  • Uhuru Peak: The ultimate objective is Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet), the highest point in Africa.
  • 6-Day Advantage: The additional day improves the pacing of the itinerary and provides more time for acclimatization.
  • Scenic Diversity: The route passes through rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and the high summit zone.

The 5-6 Day Marangu Route combines a direct approach, hut accommodation, and a well-established trail to Uhuru Peak. The six-day itinerary is generally the better option for trekkers who want additional acclimatization time before the summit attempt.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
The trek begins at Marangu Gate and enters the rainforest zone. The trail gradually climbs through dense vegetation toward Mandara Hut, where trekkers spend the night.
The route leaves the rainforest and enters the heath and moorland zone. Trekkers continue toward Horombo Hut, with views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks depending on weather conditions.
The trail crosses the upper moorland and alpine desert toward Kibo Hut. Trekkers pass through the Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi before reaching the final overnight point before the summit.
The summit attempt begins during the early hours. Trekkers ascend toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim before continuing toward Uhuru Peak. After reaching the summit, the descent continues to Kibo Hut and then toward Horombo Hut.
The final descent passes through the heath and moorland before re-entering the rainforest. Trekkers continue to Marangu Gate to complete the climb.
For the 6-day option, an additional acclimatization day is inserted around Horombo Hut before continuing toward Kibo Hut. This allows trekkers to gain elevation more gradually and can include a higher-altitude acclimatization hike before returning to Horombo for the night.

The 5-6 Day Marangu Route provides one of the most established ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, with hut accommodation and a direct trail through the mountain’s major ecological zones. The six-day option provides a more gradual schedule and additional time to adapt to altitude.
