6-7 Day Machame Route

The 6-7 Day Machame Route is one of the most popular approaches to Mount Kilimanjaro, climbing from the southern side of the mountain through diverse landscapes before reaching Uhuru Peak. The route is known for its scenic terrain, camping experience, and useful acclimatization profile. The six-day itinerary is more compact, while the seven-day itinerary adds an acclimatization day and a more gradual pace.

Key Highlights:

  • Machame Route: A scenic Kilimanjaro route that approaches the mountain from the south.
  • Scenic Diversity: The trail passes through rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and the summit zone.
  • Barranco Wall: The route includes the famous Barranco Wall, one of Kilimanjaro’s most recognizable trekking sections.
  • Shira Plateau: Trekkers cross the high-altitude Shira Plateau before continuing toward the Southern Circuit.

  • Acclimatization: The route follows a profile that allows trekkers to climb higher during the day and descend for overnight accommodation in several sections.
  • Uhuru Peak: The final objective is Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet), the highest point in Africa.
  • Camping Experience: Overnight stays take place in mountain camps using trekking tents.
  • 7-Day Advantage: The additional day provides more time for acclimatization and reduces the pressure of the summit schedule.
